Many clients think that finding a good team of tradespeople recommended by friends is enough to achieve a successful renovation. At first glance, this seems logical. An experienced team is indeed essential, but when it comes to a complex renovation or an interior with a genuine design component, it is rarely enough.

The more complex a project becomes, the greater the number of details, technical constraints and people involved. Electrical work, plumbing, joinery, lighting, finishes and custom furniture all need to work together.

An interior architecture project is not simply a collection of images or 3D renderings. Above all, it is a set of precise decisions connecting every element of the interior.

Behind a finished space are dimensions, heights, technical details, custom furniture, building services and numerous constraints that all need to work together. Even an experienced team cannot guess the client’s intentions or independently reconstruct the designer’s overall vision.

In our projects, we develop plans and technical details so that tradespeople, joiners and other specialists work according to the same logic.

It is often said that an interior architecture project increases the overall cost of a renovation. In reality, it very often helps control spending more effectively.

When a project is studied from the outset, the most expensive elements can be identified and coherent choices made before work begins. Some materials or finishes have a real impact on the space; others can be replaced with more reasonable alternatives without compromising the overall result.

Mistakes on a construction site occur in almost every renovation. They should not be treated as something exceptional. The real question is how much they will cost and what impact they will have on the project.

The problem is that a mistake rarely remains isolated. An electrical change can affect furniture. The furniture can alter certain dimensions. Those new dimensions can then affect other elements. A single decision can gradually create a chain of modifications.

A detailed project cannot eliminate every mistake, but it considerably reduces the number of decisions that have to be improvised during construction.

It is important to be transparent: even a perfectly prepared project cannot guarantee a renovation without difficulties.

Renovation work takes place in a real building, with its own characteristics and unexpected conditions. Hidden elements may appear during construction, structural constraints may be discovered, materials may become unavailable or initially specified products may need to be replaced.

Sometimes even a simple opening in a wall can reveal a situation that was impossible to identify beforehand.

Even though a project cannot eliminate every unforeseen event, we produce detailed packages of 50 to 70 pages containing plans, technical details, furniture drawings and construction details to improve the overall understanding of the work for everyone involved.

We often hear: “I already have a recommended team” or “I have tradespeople who have worked for friends.”

Good tradespeople are essential. Without good execution, no project can be completed properly. But the tradespeople and the design project do not have the same role.

The trades carry out the work. The project organises all the decisions, coordinates the different specialists and establishes a common logic. Even an excellent team cannot be expected to invent all the design and technical decisions while simultaneously carrying out the work.

A complex renovation is rarely successful when decisions are made one by one as the work progresses. The more a project includes custom furniture, integrated lighting, technical details and significant modifications, the more important it becomes to connect all these elements from the outset.
